What’s the
difference between self-love and self-esteem? Self-love is regarding oneself as
important, while self-esteem is the insistence that we always feel good about
ourselves. Self-love implies caring, respecting, having responsibility for and
knowledge of the self. Self-love leads to self-growth because part of loving
ourselves is recognising that there are parts of us that need work and that we
are valuable enough to work on. In contrast, as Dr Scott Peck observes in Further Along the Road Less Travelled, self-esteem
can lead to a stunting of self-growth because every time we are confronted by
evidence that makes us feel bad or makes us see that we are imperfect we try to
exterminate the evidence rather than use it to make some kind of
correction.
May God give
us the ability to love and value and correct ourselves. Aameen.
